How to Type Special Nepali Unicode Characters: Anusvara, Visarga & More
Beyond the standard consonants and vowels, Devanagari script includes several special characters that are essential for correct spelling in Nepali. Many users struggle to type these using either Preeti font or Unicode IME. This guide covers them all.
Anusvara (ं) — Nasal Dot
The Anusvara appears as a dot above a letter and represents a nasal sound. In Preeti font, it is mapped to specific keys depending on the layout. In Unicode, it is encoded as U+0902. In Romanized Unicode, type M (capital) after a vowel to insert it.
Visarga (ः) — Aspiration Marker
Visarga represents a voiceless glottal fricative and is used in loanwords from Sanskrit. In Unicode, it is U+0903. In traditional Nepali typing it is rare, but important for formal or literary text.
Chandrabindu (ँ) — Moon Dot
The Chandrabindu represents nasalization of vowels. In Preeti font it has a dedicated key. In Romanized Unicode IME, type a tilde (~) modifier to insert it.
